Valladolid and Cenotes Xkeken and Samula

Valladolid – This magical town was founded in 1543. It combines features of its pre-Hispanic past, of the colonial period and of today. Its architectural beauty shows in: the San Bernardino de Siena Convent, the Municipal Palace, the Church of San Gervacio and the Chapel of the Candelaria, the San Roque Museum, the Casa de Los Venados Museum and the Centro Artisanal Zaci (Zaci Handcraft Center).

Cenotes Xkeken and Samula, The Xkeken Cenote is about 170 miles from Cancun and is stunningly lit with electric lights, the only natural light source being a tiny hole in the cavernous ceiling dripping with stalactites. The water is clean and cool and the swimming is excellent. Exploratory walks can also be made through the many passages leading off of the Cenote, for which a torch is needed.

Legend has it that this Cenote was found when a pig fell through a large hole in the ground, which turned out to be the ceiling of the Cenote, and the owners went to look for it.
Locals created a stairway down to the water and have been enjoying it ever since. This Cenote could actually be labeled a cavern since there is a limestone ceiling with stalactites still in existence there.
The water is very refreshing, so remember to bring your swimsuit. Around midday, the sunlight comes through the hole in the ceiling and illuminates the turquoise colored water. Cenote Samula is a short distance away.
